Sometimes the most meaningful connections are forged in the most unexpected places, like the family wedding in Dublin where I first met Nick, the CEO of the immersive studio Algorithm. After a couple of pints and some friendly banter, we hit it off immediately. We kept in touch, discussing everything from business to the latest Irish jokes and the peculiarities of life itself. When Nick and his associate and art director, Daniel, approached me in October 2022 with a unique opportunity to direct a short film celebrating the River Boyne in Ireland, I couldn’t help but think, “Why not? What’s the worst that could happen?”
As I delved into the mythology surrounding the River Boyne, I became captivated by its wealth of symbolism and stories. Some might say there’s a fine line between mythology and a good old-fashioned yarn, but who am I to judge? We set out to create a three-minute short film projected onto a water screen on the river itself during the Christmas season. After all, nothing says holiday cheer like standing in the freezing cold while watching ancient lore come to life.
Over the winter of 2022, we brought the film to life with a series of projections at the River Boyne & the Solstice Arts Centre. Our goal was simple: create an experience that would transport audiences to a world of wonder, laughter, and rich Irish mythology. With a touch of Irish humor, we wove tales of the enigmatic figure of Boann, the goddess of the River, and the elusive Salmon of Knowledge. And who could forget the hazelnut trees – those cheeky little symbols of wisdom and inspiration?
Throughout the winter months, audiences gathered to experience these unique and enchanting scenes in various locations – from urban spaces to open water. Some say laughter is the best medicine, and what better way to cure the winter blues than with a little mythological mirth? We brought these ancient stories to life with a wink and a nudge, never taking ourselves too seriously but always respecting the rich history of the region.
Working on this project, I couldn’t help but be reminded of a good Irish proverb: “A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything.” The overwhelmingly positive response to our installations was proof that a bit of humor can go a long way. The dedicated team at Algorithm, my small Irish family, worked tirelessly day and night, overcoming the immense challenge of melding technology with moving currents in freezing temperatures – all while maintaining their wry sense of humor.
As we wrapped up the project, I looked back on this incredible journey with a mix of pride and amusement. Working with the talented team at Algorithm on this ambitious and slightly madcap project was an experience I’ll never forget. The Boyne River experience is one that will stay with me for a lifetime, and I eagerly await the opportunity to collaborate with my Algorithm family again – hopefully, over a pint or two at the local pub.
